Review: Haley McAndrews, "Toaster Haiku"
At first you may wonder why. A whole book of haiku about...bread toasters. Because yes, it's sheer nonsense! But just start leafing through and wait until this unique idea starts growing on you and you'll soon realize how brilliant, funny, and groundbreaking this collection of illustrated poems is.
Needless to say, children will love these cutish illustrations of toasters running around and the short poems are the perfect first reading with mom and dad.
The 5-7-5 toaster response to surrealism, this booklet is unmissable if you're a fan of English haiku and...toasters, of course!
Rating:
5 stars out of 5 haikua
Embrace Haley McAndrews's healthy obsession with toaster haiku!

Altri splendidi haiku di Laura Marino Trotta
Tutti i diritti sui testi presentati sono e restano dell’autrice.
haikuav
mallo di noce —
fotogrammi sbiaditi
i nostri visi
steli ghiacciati —
sibila il silenzio
dietro di me
casa di cura —
il sole dell’estate
fermo sul prato
oscilla un ramo —
in quel lento abbaiare
che porta il vento
acanto in fiore —
nel palazzo reale
con gli scarponi
seduta a terra —
finalmente l’altezza
di un papavero
fiori di campo —
prega da solo il santo
nel tabernacolo
scatole vuote —
nelle onde di settembre
gamberi a riva
ancora inverno —
allodole sul filo
i pensieri di ieri
silenzio opaco —
foglie secche d’estate
fra la polvere
occhi di bimba —
brilla di luce fredda
la ragnatela
odore secco
di platani in autunno —
cocci di vetro
germogliano le ossa
del vecchio tronco —
polvere d’oro
tazza incrinata —
un filo di mimosa
sul tavolino
stare nel vento —
macerano sull’erba
le foglie di ieri
il mare solo —
nel vento roteano
le alghe tremule
occhi di brina —
alberi nella nebbia
evanescenti
due passi al sole —
i calli sulle mani
non vanno via
ancora pioggia —
quella macchia sul soffitto
mi assomiglia
talvolta a sera
nascosto un usignolo —
backup della chat
filari d’alberi
scorrono al mio fianco —
pensieri lenti
cerchi nell’acqua —
una goccia frantuma
l’intero cielo
coperta lisa —
interrotta la trama
del bianco giglio
presto l’autunno —
le mappe del silenzio
per orientarmi
ancora notte
mi vesto dei tuoi occhi —
passi leggeri
microcredito —
la terra nelle mani
per le orchidee
gambe graffiate —
tra stoppie secche
il grido di un fagiano
cascine sparse —
il peso dell’autunno
su ogni tetto
sotto il cielo —
il fiume e la sua via
senza ragione

Two Poems by Amelia Rosselli (Translation from the Italian by Maurizio Brancaleoni)
*All rights reserved. No part of the following translations may be reproduced in any form or by any means without prior authorization. For information, send an e-mail to mbmbrancaleoni@gmail.com.*
[Amelia Rosselli, “Le poesie”, Garzanti, p.520]
A face of yours does have human contours
a gesture of yours is really springlike and
a looking at me of yours is the first of the things
I think of when – in the vivid excelling
of the afternoon clouds – very slowly I
look for you.
And if dying is an everyday thing
your glance too has evil lights
and a sign of shyness or of love of yours
does nothing but delay the horror
of a day.
[Amelia Rosselli, “Le poesie”, Garzanti, p.612]
Hunger blew and it was extreme, the symptom
or the (singular) single fit of an extreme
passion, sincere – with its spreading
iconoclastic clothes on the ground and on the
sidewalk – of a lost value and remotely
what I’d have wanted to do. Sincerity
(oh fit of the last passion), sincere
it was, in its waking up at the forbidden hour
and in taking out, from each brush or toothpaste
what could be the good hour
the ungraspable moment now that the matter
is delicate; and you would count the hours, of a
possible prize of yours, and you would count the future
as if it were coins!
Amelia Rosselli (1930-1996) is considered one of the most important Italian poets of the past century. Born in Paris in 1930, she had to flee to Switzerland and then to the U.S. after the murder of her father and her uncle at the hands of Fascist militias. Back in Italy in the late 40s, in 1950 she settled in Rome, where she would spend the rest of her life. While her early literary experiments were in French and English, most of her output was in her father's native language.
